Leading through Organizational Sciences

A three-part executive learning journey created and led by Dr. Pravir Malik to help leaders understand organizations as complex adaptive systems—and develop the perceptual and practical capacity to lead them.

1Executive systems journey

The original Forbes Councils program

Leadership built from a deeper understanding of organization.

The program moved executives beyond management techniques to the underlying sciences that shape organizational behavior. Participants examined the system at four connected scales—individual, team, company and market.

Its three parts were deliberately sequenced. Leaders first learned to recognize the nature and advantages of complex adaptive systems; then to sense and influence entropy through EQ and real-time measures; and finally to work with Light as a practical source of perception, coherence and organizational principle.

The three-part curriculum

From seeing complexity to leading possibility.

Part 01Foundation

Complex Adaptive Systems

Establish a living-systems view of organization and understand where durable advantage comes from.

  • Overview of Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS)
  • The driver of advantage in CAS
  • Deep patterns of sustainability
  • Planning in a CAS environment
Part 02Intelligence

Entropy, EQ & Operations

Develop a real-time understanding of organizational dynamics and strengthen the team’s capacity to respond.

  • Drivers of inefficiency in CAS
  • Entropy in organizational systems
  • EQ as a means to manage entropy
  • Creating an edge in team operations
  • Real-time metrics for developing a CAS
Part 03Perception

The Power of Light

Extend systems leadership into a practice of perception—making Light the bridge from organizational science to deeper possibility.

  • The logic of using Light
  • The power of Light
  • Origins of organizational principles
  • Practice with visualized Light
  • Systematizing Light Dynamics
  • The power of the individual

Why Light belongs in the program

The third part is a continuation—not a departure.

Complex adaptive systems require more than intellectual analysis. Leaders must also become sensitive to subtle shifts in people, relationships and possibility. The program’s movement into Light made that perceptual dimension explicit.

Practices using visualized Light were introduced as a way to cultivate coherence, creativity and a more direct relationship with emerging organizational dynamics. This foundation continues through Light Dynamics learning and certification.

Forbes field notes · Zappos

Light as an organizational-change practice.

In this two-part Forbes series, Dr. Pravir Malik documents the approach he followed at Zappos to use Light across personal, interpersonal, team and organizational dimensions. The essays show how the perceptual principles in Part 3 moved into practical experiments with change.

The learning continues

From executive program to Light Dynamics certification.

The certification path develops the capacity to work with Light more deliberately—and to bring practices of perception, harmony and creative possibility into organizational settings.

For the wider body of research, books and explorations underlying this work, Cosmology of Light provides the deeper scientific, philosophical and experiential context.

The executive cohort

Leaders participated from more than 60 organizations.

The original Forbes Councils offering brought together executives representing companies and institutions across technology, finance, manufacturing, data, media, education, professional services and more.
